Throughout the first two weeks in December, the Fenland Council Community Safety Team along with Police, the P&CC outreach worker and the Children and Young People’s Area Partnerships’ Manager at Cambridgeshire County Council, delivered the final workshops of the year to six educational establishments in the Fenland area
Following the Chelsea’s Choice Production that was performed by a professional theatre company in September, each school had some focus groups held on the New Horizons Vehicle where the play was discussed and conversation was encouraged around what they saw. The students were also tasked to research some local charities that are available to support the growing up process and all it entails in hopes that any suspicious signs from friends would be reported. Following the production we have had a disclosure and have identified a few students that would benefit from some further support.
What is Chelsea’s Choice?
Chelsea’s choice is an innovative 35 minute long theatre play that is followed by a 25 minute long plenary session. The play is targeted at young people (aged 12+, but other years will be excepted).
“The drama tells the story of a group of three students who discover the diary of a girl called Chelsea. Chelsea was a young girl who, having fallen out with her friends and family, was approached by a man called Gary. Gary was older, owned a car, had a flat and treated her like an adult. Unfortunately Gary was not what he seemed to be! Chelsea’s story is played out and examined by the three students along with their teacher in an attempt to understand what happened to Chelsea and how it could have been prevented.”
So far it has been seen by thousands of young people & hundreds of professionals & has proven highly effective in:-
- Raising Awareness of Healthy Relationships
- Promoting Safe Internet Use
- Identifying Risky Situations
- Raising Awareness of The Grooming Process & the differing forms that it can take
- Raising Awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation & the differing forms that it can take
- Sign-posting relevant services.
For adult audiences it also:
Raising Awareness of ‘the Warning Signs of CSE’
Raises Awareness of the journey that young people may have been on that has resulted in them being exploited – a journey that can all too easily make it seem as though they have ‘made their own choice’ and can leave them not seeing themselves as victims and fighting against any intervention.
